Años atrás, un joven cineasta (Colin Levy) le escribió una carta a su héroe, Martin Scorsese, una epístola en la que le preguntaba qué películas debía ver para ampliar sus conocimientos cinematográficos. Para su sorpresa, el realizador le respondió y le proporcionó una lista —a través de su asistente— con los títulos de 39 películas extranjeras esenciales que debía ver —o como muchos le están diciendo ahora, las 39 películas que debes ver antes de morir.
